[ Interview with DJ A-Plus ]
Dfined: DJ A-Plus so tell us about yourself?
DJ A-Plus: My real name is Andrew to those that don’t know. Born and raised in San Diego, CA. Currently during the week you can find me in San Diego because that is where my day job is located, but DJing as me traveling up and down the west coast on the weekends.
Dfined: How were you inspired to become a dj?
DJ A-Plus: I grew up listening to radio mixshows as a kid here in California. I probably gained an interest in actually wanting to be a DJ around age 11, but it wasn’t until I was 15 that I got my first set of turntables. Just seeing how a DJ had so much control over a party is what truly made me want to be a DJ.
Dfined: How long have you been spinning for?
DJ A-Plus: 10 years
Dfined: What kind of music do you specialize in?
DJ A-Plus: I’d say what I specialize in is club music. With so many types of music out there right now from hip hop, electro, house, 80s, rock, etc… I play what is needed to move the crowd.
Dfined: What company or group do you spin for?
DJ A-Plus: In terms of promoters, in San Diego I’m part of SDsource. I work with a couple other promoters here in SD, OC and LA. As for groups, I rep Models in the Trunk and Babe Blvd.
Dfined: Do you have any goals for the future?
DJ A-Plus: Continue to DJ as much as I can and travel to new cities and countries hopefully.
Dfined: Are you more of a viynl or serato or both?
DJ A-Plus: Right now Serato is just so much easier to travel with than records. After spending more than 6 years gigging with a rolling case, backpack and an additional case of records, having to carry just a laptop is my choice now a days.
Dfined: Who is your favorite dj(s) and why?
DJ A-Plus: Its hard to just pick one DJ as a favorite. In terms of club DJs today, DJ Scene is one of the DJs I would pay to go see at a club. Everything he does from song selection, scratching,
Dfined: What sets you different from other djs?
DJ A-Plus: The way I set myself apart from other DJs is on my programming. Basically being able to set up songs in a way that work together. Anyone can download the Top 20 songs on the radio and play those, but how is that different that just listening to the radio. I want people to hear me spin and be like “WOW! I had fun tonight.”
Dfined: What was the most memorable moment while djing?
DJ A-Plus: Anytime I’m DJing for a huge crowd of like 1000+ club goers, I always remember those nights. Just being able to see so many people enjoying themselves to something I’m doing is pretty much the ultimate high for a DJ. If I had to chose one m
oment, I’d have to say sharing the stage with DJ AM. I had the opportunity of opening up for him a couple years back and I still remember that night till this day.
Dfined: Now for the fun! So what your most embarrassing moment?
DJ A-Plus: The most embarrassing moment DJing I probably don’t remember because I was drunk. I’ve been told I had a couple moments when I was completely into the music I was playing, but I was either trainwrecking or playing like the same song 3 times in a row. My take on it is if I don’t remember it, it didn’t happen. Other than that, anything else that is truly embarrassing is staying in the archives and not getting leaked out.
Dfined: Aside from Djing what else do you do?
DJ A-Plus: Right now I do have 9-5 job for the time being. I finished my undergrad at SDSU in 2008, but I’d like to go back to school sometime this year and start my masters. Other than that, I spend my time chillin with the homies and just try to stay low key when I’m not DJing.
Dfined: In a fire would your Mixer or Serato? (pick one only)
DJ A-Plus: If you’re asking if I would save my laptop or a my mixer, then I’d have to choose my laptop. Besides my Blackberry, my laptop is basically is another extension of my body.
Dfined: What song annoys you the most that is out?
DJ A-Plus: Honestly there are too many to just choose one. But if I have to pick one off the top of my head I would say Stanky Leg or Calle Ocho.
Dfined: Where can we find your latest album / music?
DJ A-Plus: A lot of the music in terms of albums and singles are sent to me from the various record labels. The majority of the music I do download are from blogs and forums. I am a serious computer nerd so I am always searching for the newest and hottest new thing.
Dfined: How did you hear about Dfined?
DJ A-Plus: I was told about it from my friend Viet who is the photographer behind Models in the Trunk.
Dfined: What do you think about the Dfined site?
DJ A-Plus: The site is fresh. Its not your average coverage site that is out there, and I’m not just saying that cause I’m being featured on it. Haha.
Dfined: Do you have a myspace / facebook / website?
DJ A-Plus:
twitter.com/apleezy
myspace.com/aplus
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=721738392
Dfined: How about an official personal website?
DJ A-Plus: www.djaplus.com
It is still under construction, but look for it fully complete by July 1st, 2009.
Dfined: Any last shotouts?
DJ A-Plus: First of all thanks to Jerry and Johnny Ramos at Dfined. Big ups to Models in the Trunk(MITT), Babe Blvd, SDsource, Mass Appeal DJs, friends and others who have supported me over the years.
