[ Interview with JAZMIN ]

Dfined: So tell us a little bit about Jazmin.

Jazmin: JAZMIN consists of four sisters who love music. From writing to singing to dancing, we love it all. There is nothing we would rather do but perform and entertain with each other for the rest of our lives.

Dfined: How did the group came about?

Jazmin: We always sang in church together and people would ask us if we performed professionally. When we started to think it was a possibility, Felicia was the one who started to promote us online and looking for auditions.

Dfined: How did the group come up with the name Jazmin?

Jazmin: This was a long process!! We thought of everything and anything. Nadia finally thought of JAZMIN because of our love for jazz music and its harmonies. The jasmine flower also means grace and beauty in China which we liked as well to represent our Chinese heritage.

Dfined: What inspired you ladies to sing?

Jazmin: Our mom is a piano teacher, so music has been in our lives from the very start. Since we came from a strict household, we weren’t allowed to listen to a lot of secular music which gave us a different musical background. Our parents would play Motown and Standards records instead and we just fell in love with the harmonies. We would watch a lot of musicals too which really inspired us performance wise. We love to bring happiness through our music and make people smile, sing, and dance. That’s what drives us.

Dfined: How long has the group been singing?

Jazmin: Since the baby could sing! Once Daria could walk on stage when she was about 2 years old, we started singing and never stopped since then.

Dfined: What famous artists do you ladies look up to?

Jazmin: From Ella Fitzgerald and Gene Kelly to The Supremes and Jackson 5 to Beyonce and Jojo to Ludacris and Jay-Z, we love them all.

Dfined: What sets Jazmin different from other singing groups out there?

Jazmin: Well there’s the obvious fact that we’re sisters so we know each other inside out compared to other groups that were put together. We also have different voices, but very similar tones which gives us a distinct sound when our voices blend. One of our biggest strengths is our ear for harmonies. We’ve been singing together all our lives so it comes natural to us.

Dfined: You ladies were on MTV’s Top Pop Group. How did that go?

Jazmin: MTV’s Top Pop Group was an unbelievable and unforgettable experience. We still keep in touch with everyone on the show because we became such a family. Being on national TV was definitely surreal and exciting. We were so thankful for the opportunity to be part of the show and are excited to experience the next chapter of our career!

Dfined: How did you hear about MTV’s Top Pop Group?

Jazmin: One of the casting directors from the show contacted us through the internet.

Dfined: What are some big accomplishments Jazmin has made?

Jazmin: The fact that this was just a dream of ours and we are slowly making it become a reality through hard work and dedication is a big accomplishment in itself. Just being able to say we’re doing what we love living and breathing music on a daily basis is more than enough.

Dfined: What is the most memorable thing that has happened?

Jazmin: We were the “Diva Discovery” for Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Aids Benefit called “Divas Simply Singing” where the original Dream Girls, Natalie Cole, Loretta Devine and several other renowned acts were a part of. We were introduced by the legendary Benjamin Vereen and after our performance; we had the audience cheering on their feet! We felt so honored to be there and it was an amazing experience.

Dfined: Now how about the most embarrassing moment?

Jazmin: Celia: For one show we opened up by saying our names and I was so into the crowd that I totally forgot to say mine!

Dfined: Did you ladies have to sing at family parties?

Jazmin: Yes. We had mini talent shows at our family reunions and we were always expected to have something to sing since we were toddlers. We had our own mini family choir with our cousins by default during the holidays.

Dfined: Who is the lead person of the group? Why?

Jazmin: Every sister has a “lead” role and brings a different element to the group. Each of our voices emote a unique vibe and emotion to our songs. We determine different lead vocals based on the lyrics and feel, but Daria is the youngest so naturally she is our baby Michael Jackson of the group.

Dfined: Who is the dorkiest one of the group? Why?

Jazmin: Celia: I would have to say I am the silliest since I am a natural born klutz. I love life and live it to the fullest, even if that means falling down at times.

Dfined: Do we expect more from you ladies in the years to come?

Jazmin: You can expect A LOT more from us! We can’t imagine doing anything else so we all hope you are ready and will come on for the ride!

Jazmin: We are passionate people so we love it when we meet other people that are passionate as well. It’s great to see a bunch of friends coming together for something they believe in.

Jazmin: Everything we have achieved so far would not have been possible without God. Because of Him he has blessed us in so many ways. We have such wonderful and supportive parents, unbelievable friends, the best fans in the world and the opportunity to do what we love for the rest of our lives! We are so thankful.
