Most of you all hear his mixes on Wild 94.9! An some of you may have heard him spin at a local bay area club but us at Dfined are very honored to have J.Espinosa featured on our site. [ Interview with J.Espinosa ]
Dfined: So dj j.espinosa tell us about yourself?
J.Espinosa: Im about 130lbs soak and wet, and i eat all day long. Just cant seem to get any bigger, oh well…haha ok Im 24 years old ive been Djing since i was 14. Music has always been a passion of mine, since my elementry school days, i was always listening to the radio, and been into different genres of music. So Picking up on the art of mixing, and Djing came along pretty fast when I got my start.
Dfined: How were you inspired to be a dj?
J.Espinosa: My uncle who was a DJ back in the days DJed a party for my 8th grade graduation, and he let me TRY and mix a few songs. That was my 1st time ever touching a pair of turntables. I guess it was love at 1st site haha So a few months later I found some used technics in the pennysaver, and it was history from there!
Dfined: How long have you been djing?
J.Espinosa: My first gig was probly three months after I got my DJ equipment, I was 14yrs old. So 10 years
Dfined: What kind of music do you specialize in?
J.Espinosa: I cant say I specialize in any certain type of music. If you catch me in the club, I literally play EVERYTHING…kind of scary
Dfined: What company or group do you spin for?
J.Espinosa: I DJ on Wild 94.9 FM in San Francisco, CA…Never had a DJ crew or anything like that
Dfined: Do you have any goal for the future?
J.Espinosa: I want to be like Mike
Dfined: What would you like people to know about you?
J.Espinosa: I want to be like Mike
Dfined: Who is your favorite dj(s) and why?
J.Espinosa: At the moment I cant say I really have just ONE favorite DJ. But if i had to break things down…
Dj Scotty Boy, because he markets himself so well, and somehow everywhere I see this guy at, every girl in the club comes up to him and gives him a hug lol
Dj Scene, because he’s a hard worker, and his sets are full of energy, alot of really cool scratching, and turntablism.
Jazzy Jim, he was who i grew up listenning to on the radio, one of my biggest mentors, and is still a good friend to this day! Jazzy always knew how to pick what songs were gonna be hits before they were even on the radar. I would always put myself in his position when I listen to new music, and say….”What would Jazzy think…”
Dj Erock – He is the man when it comes to the business perspective in DJing. Another mentor to me, and great friend also! I keep telling him he needs to start a DJ School, and start makin some money for all his good advice!
Dfined: What sets you different from other djs?
J.Espinosa: I really just do what im feeling at the moment. If you catch me at the club djing, im not always just playing the biggest records that are on the radio. Thats what makes alot of DJs sound the same.
Dfined: What was the most memorable moment while djing?
J.Espinosa: I get to DJ at all the big concerts that our radio station puts on. So i share the stage with all the artists who perform, and about 17,000 people in the crowd. Its a really cool feeling to see that many people go crazy when im DJing!
Dfined: Now for the fun! So what your most embarrassing moment?
J.Espinosa: Most embarrassing moment…?? Hmm Well one time I was Djing a few years back, and we pretty much had a party inside the DJ booth. One of my friends decides to spray me down with a champaigne bottle while im DJing, so he does, I get soaked, champaigne goes all over the mixer, the music shuts off, and the club was closed…haha oops
Dfined: Whats a funny mashup you have done soo far?
J.Espinosa: Sean Kingston over the “da da daa” song
Dfined: In a fire would your Mixer or Serato? (pick one only)
J.Espinosa: They could both burn!! As long as i still have my laptop with all my music hehe
Dfined: What song annoys you the most that is out?
J.Espinosa: Waaaaaay too many to name
Dfined: Where can we find your latest album / music?
J.Espinosa: All my mash-ups/Remixes are available on crooklynclan.net. Also I have a new mix CD about to come out. I havent came up with a title yet, but its all old school hip hop & r&b/pop from my high school years, anything that came out around 97-2001 ishh, when its done you’ll be able to download it for free off my myspace!
Dfined: How did you hear about Dfined?
J.Espinosa: My boy Jerry of Dfined reached out and put me up on it!
Dfined: What do you think about the Dfined site?
J.Espinosa: Its really cool, the first time i checked it out, I got stuck lookin at all the different features. I support the Dfined,org movement for sure!
