[ Interview with DJ B-EZ ]

Dfined: So dj b-ez tell us about yourself?

DJ B-EZ: My name is Brandon Masangcay. My alias (B-EZ) was given to me by a close friend in high school (RIP VEE). I currently reside in Hercules, CA. Besides family, there are 2 most important / must-haves in my life: music & education. Lucky for me, I chose the path where those two can work parallel with each other as I go to school at Expression College For Digital Arts. Aside from being a nerd, I love to play basketball, eat cheeseburgers and pizzas, and enjoy life as much as possible.

Dfined: How were you inspired to be a dj?

DJ B-EZ: I wasn’t essentially into mixing when I first started out. I first spotted DJing when I was in middle school. A friend of mine and his cousins were scratch artists aka turntablist. I just loved to watch videos and watch battles of people scratching. It wasn’t til about the end of my senior year when I found the energy you get from mixing at parties. People who inspired me were DJ Roldan, DJ AJ, DJ Swift, DJ Royal, DJ J. Espinosa, DJ Erock, DJ Amen, DJ Qbert, Mixmaster Mike.

Dfined: How long have you been djing?

DJ B-EZ: I’d say between 3-4 years now as a mixer.

Dfined: What kind of music do you specialize in?

DJ B-EZ: I really love the Hip Hop game, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get out of it. But ever since the DJ world got into digital and away from vinyl, the mash-up era kind of took this thing by storm. I think it’s dope that I can now start playing hits from other genres and be able to rock it with hip hop.

Dfined: What company or group do you spin for?

DJ B-EZ: I’ve been with Illatainment Productions since 2005 which is now known as Rock The Bay Entertainment. I now have my own DJ crew alongside with my friend: Ricc The DJ.

Dfined: Do you have any goals for the future?

DJ B-EZ: My major is audio engineering, so hopefully that takes flight. Doing music production is a must for me. Hopefully the world will recognize me as a strong song-writer/producer and will always remember me as the DJ from the Bay Area.

Dfined: What would you like people to know about you?

DJ B-EZ: I love Philosophy and Psychology. The two are what keeps my mind in the right place through the good and the bad. I believe that anything you do in life, isn’t about where you get … it is about how you get there.

Dfined: Who is your favorite dj(s) and why?

DJ B-EZ: J. Espinosa – I been looking up to J. Espinosa for the longest time. I think he was one of the first DJs I’ve heard that can CONSISTENTLY create mixes that sound like it’s been done on 4 turntables. Its years later, and he is still more crafty than most DJs I know.

Ricc The DJ – Even though I was there to help with his learning process when he first started, it was his drive that brought him to the level he is at now. To watch his progress and see him have fun with it, inspires me.

DJ Erock – Dude’s been in the game for a long time. He’s been the quiet contender in the DJ world for a while, but its about time the world started paying its dues for him. I’ve done my share of history notes on him, and now I have the honor to have him as my mentor. I know he’s there watching what I do, making sure I do what I do for all the right reasons.

DJ Amen – I met him in 2006 when we both did a club in San Diego with San Quinn. He was probably one of the first DJs I seen just “living the life.” He know’s his rank, and being able to see that, rubs off a great motivation for me. He is also one of my mentors who looks over my shoulders to congratulate when I do the right thing.

Dfined: What sets you different from other djs?

DJ B-EZ: #1, I did not pick this up because it was a fad, or because I wanted a new social life. I was able to start in the game on VINYL (not cds or serato). I was in the DJ stores, scrambling through racks and rows of vinyl looking for the illest breaks and fresh hits; spending hundreds of dollars for all these recrods where I only wanted one or two songs.

#2, It’s not just the love I have for it, but it’s the life I’ve lived from it. Being passionate about it has gotten me this far, I only expect myself to get better from here.

#3, Other than driving for fame & fortune, I believe in a higher purpose in life. I want to not just make a mark in the entertainment world, but I want to take a stand in the world itself. You ever watch TV when you see famous actors & musicians acting as humanitarians and taking care of the world? I want to be able to do that.

Dfined: What was the most memorable moment while djing?

DJ B-EZ: 2005 @ club Boondocks. I wasn’t even on the line-up but I had my music in the car. I guess one of the DJs were going to show up late so I was asked to spin. I did my thing and rocked the crowd for my first time ever in a club, and guess who was there to see it happen… J. Espinosa. He came up to me and congratlated me on my mixing.

Dfined: Now for the fun! So what your most embarrassing moment?

DJ B-EZ: I was in a GQ contest, when I took my shirt off. HaHa “skinny B!”

Dfined: Who is your favorite model out there?

DJ B-EZ: Right when I got into the industry, the most memorable model was Jeri Lee. I remember hanging out with her at Boondocks and she signed a flier for me (yup still got it). BUT… I think Ms. Ashley Vee is winning the model race for me these days.

Dfined: In a fire would your Mixer or Serato? (pick one only)

DJ B-EZ: Haha Fuck my mixer. I was just talking about, I’ll rock a crowd on a Radio Shack mixer if i had to. I will never be able to replace my Serato.

Dfined: What song annoys you the most that is out?

DJ B-EZ: Even though I think Chris Brown is a good entertainer. His “forever” song is getting way too much plays on the airwaves. Everytime I start my car, everytime my alarm goes off, television on MTV… That shit is even on Double-Mint Gum commercials! I respect it though, hard work pays off.

Dfined: Where can we find your latest album / music?

DJ B-EZ: You can download my “Super Sexy Mix” on the myspace. I am currently working on a new mixtape so look out for that also on the myspace. If you want to hear me live, hit up the parties!

Dfined: How did you hear about Dfined?

DJ B-EZ: I think I heard it through conversations with Rock The Jay and N.Roc from Rock The Bay. I think it was about photography. Man…everyone talks about Dfined.

Dfined: What do you think about the Dfined site?

DJ B-EZ: The Dfined site is sweet. Its one of those things that most people probably wish they could do, but never knew how to actually make it work. YOU GUYS make it work, haha.

Dfined: Do you have a myspace / facebook?

DJ B-EZ: www.myspace.com/mrdjbez

Dfined: How about an official personal website?

DJ B-EZ: its in the works :)

Dfined: Any last shotouts?

DJ B-EZ: shout out to THE ZOO & RTB! and thanks DFINED for hooking me up with an interview.
